New Year, New You
I have enjoyed reading on social media platforms all the hopes, dreams, wishes and plans for the New Year. And for so many people that will be the motivations to take hold of what each hopes and wishes to achieve in life. I will admit, I too was one of those folks that would only embark on a project or task on a certain day or time -- the first of the month, on my birthday, and even the new year. So by no means am I knocking individual choices to start such goals on some of the milestone dates as examples noted here. I will note that my rigid approach to the method also set up me up for failures in my life. I found if I had not started what I planned on the date set, it would go by the wayside and. I would give up. And if did get started on the date planned, but had not yet met the unrealistic goal I would set, I would give up. And not even plan to start again. My out. This last year was a year of letting go of the need for those rigid dates. And finding forgiveness for when I failed, missed or fell off the wagon of whatever task or goal I had planned. And when I say forgiveness, that would be forgiving myself, saying to myself "I will do better this time". This was probably one of the biggest gift I gave myself in the last year. One, forgiving myself allowed me to make mistakes, figure out why I didn't stay on task and evaluate it on how to improve - the lesson to be learned. Two, it helped me release the rigidness of own thinking and detach from those self imagined milestone start date requirements. Every day was a "start" date. Third, lessons and successes happen every day - not just on the first of the month, my birthday or the beginning of a new year. And lastly, letting go allowed me to get back on task faster, not dwelling on the failure so long, find the lesson and feel excited to keep going forward. So as the New Year kicks off and those resolutions start to wane in the weeks to come (or for some, days to come) - don't give up. Forgive your missed day or days - get back on task. Truly evaluate if that rigid date was critical to the task or a means to quit and give up. Success and lessons happen every day - how do you chose to approach it? Treat every day as the start of the new year that begins that day - and keep moving forward. ~ChaCha
